IDENTIFY THE HELICOPTER

What helicopter is flying over my house?

A helicopter hovering or circling overhead is one of the most-asked "what is that?" questions — and usually has an ordinary answer. Many helicopters broadcast ADS-B just like aeroplanes, so AeroScope can often tell you what it is and what it’s doing. Here’s how, and the honest exceptions.

Usual suspects

What it most likely is

👮 Police / law enforcement

Circling a wide area, often at night, supporting an incident on the ground. Some forces limit what they broadcast.

📺 News / media

Orbiting a traffic incident, event or breaking story to get a stable camera shot.

🚑 Air ambulance / HEMS

Transiting fast and low, or landing at a scene or hospital. Time-critical, so direct routing.

🚁 Military

Transit or training. Flagged from ICAO hex and callsign — see military over my house.

🗺️ Survey / utility

Slow, methodical grid or line-following for power lines, pipelines, mapping or aerial photography.

🧑‍✈️ Private / charter

Point-to-point transport or sightseeing, often broadcasting full identity.

How to check on AeroScope

Honest exception. Some police and military rotorcraft transmit limited or no ADS-B, so a helicopter you can clearly hear may not appear on any tracker — including this one. AeroScope shows what is broadcast; it can’t reveal a transponder that’s off.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What helicopter is flying over my house right now?
Open aeroscope.live, set your location, and look at the low, slow aircraft nearby. Many helicopters broadcast ADS-B, so you’ll often see the type (e.g. EC135, AW139) and operator, plus whether it’s orbiting or transiting. Some police and military helicopters limit their broadcast and may not appear.
Why is a helicopter circling my house or neighbourhood?
The most common reasons are a police operation supporting officers on the ground, a news crew filming an incident, an air ambulance, or a survey/photography flight. AeroScope classifies the orbit pattern and shows the operator where available, so you can usually tell which it is.
Can I track a police helicopter?
Sometimes. Many do broadcast ADS-B and are visible, but some law-enforcement aircraft transmit limited or no position data for operational reasons, so they may not show on AeroScope or any public tracker.
Is a helicopter hovering over my house dangerous?
Almost never. Hovering or circling is normal for policing, news, medical, survey and traffic flights. AeroScope helps you identify it calmly; if an aircraft is genuinely operating unsafely, that’s a matter for the aviation authorities.
